{"id":2799,"date":"2020-03-19T00:28:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-19T00:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/?p=2654"},"modified":"2020-03-19T00:28:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T00:28:00","slug":"ayc-participated-in-the-african-youth-consultation-on-the-job-creation-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/new\/2020\/03\/19\/ayc-participated-in-the-african-youth-consultation-on-the-job-creation-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"AYC participated in the African Youth Consultation on the Job Creation Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>African Youth Consultation on the Job Creation Campaign, held on the Margin of the AU Summit, 7 February at Intercontinental Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the sidelines of the African\nUnion Summit, ONE Africa in partnership with the Office of African Union Envoy\non Youth brought together young people from nine countries for a one-day\nAfrican Youth Consultation on Job Creation.&nbsp;The 20 participants discussed\nhow to mobilise young Africans\u2019 opinions on key policy commitments and reforms\nthat can enable African countries to create 1 million decent jobs annually by\n2021. She thanked the participants for honoring the\ninvitation to attend this important youth consultative meeting. She informed\nthe gathering that the Republic of South Africa is chairing the AU in 2020 and\nthe theme of the year is <strong>\u2018\u2019Silencing the\nGuns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa\u2019s Development\u2019\u2019. <\/strong>Ms. Chebbi\nnoted that for younger generation,&nbsp; <strong>\u2018\u2019Silencing the Guns in Africa\u2019\u2019<\/strong> means;\nSilencing Poverty and Hunger, Silencing Youth Unemployment, Silencing Gender\nBased Violence, Silencing Corruption, Silencing Climate Crisis as these are\nsome of the root causes for conflict and violence on the African continent. She\nchallenged the young people to own this important campaign and create awareness\naround it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aya used the opportunity to\nintroduce the participants to some of the legal instruments adopted by AU such\nthe African Youth Charter and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, Governance\nCharter, the protocol for free movement of people, goods and services, as well\nas the structures of the AU, notably the Executive Council (composed of Ministers\nof Foreign Affairs) responsible for AU agenda setting before the General\nAssembly, AU Peace and Security Council similar to the UN Security Council,\nPermanent Representative Council (PRC composed of Ambassadors), Assembly (composed\nof Head of States and Government) and Specialized Technical Committees (STC on various\nissues such as Youth, Sports and Culture etc). STC meets every two years.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"622\" src=\"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/EQkO0i2XkAAUGcr.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/EQkO0i2XkAAUGcr.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/EQkO0i2XkAAUGcr-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/EQkO0i2XkAAUGcr-768x467.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>cross-section of participants <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Chebbi said the idea of this meeting is to bring the AU closer to the youth, advocate for move the agenda from youth peace and security to youth peace and development, inclusion of youth part of the Government delegation to attend AU\u2019s summit (at least 2 representatives from each member state), encourage intergenerational dialogue and collaboration amongst youth-led networks (she applauds the African Youth Commission\u2019s work in this area). The envoy noted that youth are not well organized in AU spaces and that need to be improved; youth need to co-lead with current African leaders for mentorship and leadership, need to strength working relationship between pan-African networks and finally encouraged collaboration between youth movement (African Youth Commission \u2013 AYC and Afrika Youth Movement &#8211; AYM). She thanked everyone for kind attention and wished them fruitful deliberations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Edwin\nIkhuoria, <em>Interim Executive Director at ONE Africa,<\/em><\/strong> presented\nthe Job creation \u2013 what we know from ONE campaign. In his presentation, he\nnoted that youth work should not be done as usual and should be revolutionary,\nright investment should be done in youth as it\u2019s time to empower them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/84982918_2537555273156914_1535611599010660352_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/84982918_2537555273156914_1535611599010660352_o.jpg 960w, https:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/84982918_2537555273156914_1535611599010660352_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/84982918_2537555273156914_1535611599010660352_o-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption> <strong>Edwin Ikhuoria, <em>Interim Executive Director at ONE Africa<\/em><\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Ikhuoria highlighted that the\ndrivers of war are, if the opportunity cost is not higher, then the likelihood\nof youth involving in conflict will be higher; if young people are not\nengaged\/employment there will be a lot of Peace fund, stand by force and peace\nkeeping missions in Africa. He emphasized that from 2020 the fight has to be an\neconomic fight (job creation, economic empowerment etc); need to move from rhetoric&nbsp; to action; the rest of the world is getting\nolder and Africa is growing younger (2.5million enter in labor force from now\nto 2030); 10-12 million young people entering job market, only about 3million\ngets a job; five countries including South Africa faces youth unemployment with\nrising unemployment rate to above 40%; Urban youth are disproportionately\naffected by joblessness; but the real problems is that fewer decent jobs exist\nacross the continent; informal sector creates most of the jobs in Africa (not\nmere jobs should be created but it should be decent jobs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He went on further to identify\nthe following 3 broad problems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Low\nbusiness, <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>High\nshare of unemployable workforce and youth are not empowered<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Access to\nfinance (to expand existing business or start a new one) <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, he revealed that the\nissue of electricity is also identified by African businesses as major\nchallenge and Africa is most hit by climate change and yet it\u2019s the least\ncontributor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/86458092_2537554686490306_189379668019773440_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2661\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As for \u2018\u2019<strong>what policies works\u2019\u2019, <\/strong>&nbsp;Edwin noted, limited evidences; most finding are mostly often specific to their context; access to credit, prioritization of job creation, regulatory frameworks and entrepreneurship education, Infrastructure, youth leadership and digital divide (70% of Africa\u2019s young people are not connected). He raised questions as to where will young people will be living? And the answers revealed that nearly 70% of the 15-24 olds live in rural areas (most of them are farmers); changing nature of work (technology\/tech industry i.e Jumia) employed about 3000 people across Africa and almost 100.000 commission affiliates across the globe; sectors of highest potential to absorb Africa\u2019s youth bulge (Agriculture and food system, business process outsourcing, transport and tourism, creative industry and ICT based services), and we should begin to think of exporting\/outsourcing our expertise\/services to other part of the world and put in place key policy imperatives for job creation in Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/EQkO1Q-XYAALZNj.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2662\"\/><figcaption> <strong>Nicholas Omondi Ouma <\/strong>of AU Youth Division. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong>What\ncan donors do? How can Africa create 230 million jobs by 2030? How can we get\nsolutions from 1million African young people?<\/strong> This discussion centres on the AU 1mBy2021\nInitiative: Focus on 2 E\u2019s Employment &amp; Entrepreneurship and was\nfacilitated by <strong>Nicholas Omondi Ouma <\/strong>of\nAU Youth Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Nicholas mentioned that this initiative\nis championed by the AU Chairperson to provide one million African youth with\nopportunities in education, employment, entrepreneurship and engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why\nthe initiative? <\/strong>He said it is to accelerate what is been done and AUC\nis mandated through the Agenda 2063, and other frameworks to provide the\nfollowing services to African youth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Education:\nscholarship, alternative pathways and models for teachers development <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Employment:\nskills transfer hubs, digital skills, job centres, internship and\napprenticeship<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Entrepreneurship:\nProviding growth capital to SMEs, and nurturing startups<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Engagement:\nleadership programmes, exchange and volunteer programmes and youth engagement\nplatforms <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Following\nhis presentation, participants recommended that the advocacy around the labour\nlaws and minimum wages especially at member state levels should be intensified by\nthe African Union Commission in collaboration with labour ministries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/EQkOzBxWoAUQXA5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2663\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presentation:\nTransforming education for youth employment, Viridiana Wasike, <em>CEO\nAccelevate Leads, Kenya<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/84404744_2537554523156989_4185084985843122176_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2664\"\/><figcaption> <strong>Viridiana Wasike, <em>CEO Accelevate Leads, Kenya<\/em><\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Viridiana said the Accelevate Leads\nfocus on high growth and high value areas in Africa and increase number of\nyoung people in skills development in Africa. She noted most educated African\nyouth are the most unemployed, and asked what are we not doing right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She concluded that there is need to see\nhow young people are consistent and committed to building their own development\nor network. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/EQKNSEhU0AAsU9h.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2665\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The last presenter was <strong>Ms. Sonia Kwami, Campaigns Director at ONE\nAfrica<\/strong>. Her presentation focuses on ONE Africa\u2019s youth campaign called <strong>\u2018\u2019Youth manifesto on job creation\u2019\u2019.<\/strong>\nShe took the participants through the campaign strategy on job creation and\nentrepreneurship. In the end, the participants shared their ideas on how the\nfollowing key questions could be tackled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>How can\nwe reach the youth voices? <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>And how\ncan we engage them? <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>How can\nwe hold duty bearers to account? <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/africanyouthcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/84679192_2537556109823497_831154683778170880_o-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2666\"\/><figcaption>group photo of participants <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ideas shared will be developed\nfurther to form part of the <strong>\u2018\u20191million\njob creation campaign\u2019\u2019<\/strong> to be championed by African youth with support of\nONE Africa.
